'Field' testing a Penn SSM reel and TRQ rod blank!

These pictures were taken during a trip to Watamu and Malindi, Kenya earlier this year.

I was using a Penn 850 SSM spinning reel matched with a Penn TRQ 6’6′ jigging rod. Although ‘slightly’ under gunned for  some of the abuse we gave it the rod performed superbly and lifted some big GT’s, Grouper and Amberjack from depth’s of up to 600’!.

The SSM reel is in my opinion a perfect choice for vertical jigging. Rock solid and with a smooth powerful drag it will not let you down. I had fitted a power handle to mine for even greater power.

Line was Penn International 50lb braid and we used a variety of jigs from 200grms to 550 grms. I rigged the jigs with both single and double assist hooks in 4/0 to 8/0. Make sure you choose only the best extra strong split rings for this style of fishing (the same goes for the split ring pliers) I used a set from the Berkley range of tools.

Roll on next year when I can go armed with a new Penn TRQ reel to test to the limit!
