Carp Army recruit – Leigh Steele

Hi and welcome to my blog, let’s start by introducing myself. My name is Leigh Steele 32 years of age happy in a relationship and we are expecting our first child and yes I’m still aloud out fishing at the moment!! My fishing started when I was about 10 years of age I kept on at my dad to take me fishing he had given up the sport at the time, but he gave into my whining and took me to some local dykes that we had access to catching rudd a cast great fun and I was hooked and from then I progressed to other waters catching bream and tench more silvers etc., it was only when I sat there watching my float that it disappeared of like a rocket and I bent into this fish stripping line off my reel and before I could do anything it had done me in the reeds I was gutted, going home not just losing the fish but my favourite float and after sulking for a few hours it made me more determined to go back and catch that massive monster, which I did after a few trips not that big at the end all of 7lbs (if it was the monster I lost) but that is what got me started fishing for carp.
I’m writing this blog as I’ve been given the opportunity to be part of the Gulp Army!! It all started a few years back when I was down my local pub I got talking to Rob Nunn and not knowing at the time he worked for JRC we chatted over a few pints and to his credit that I was asking so many questions to bore him to death, that we met up again this time on the bank and with a bit of help tweaking a few things I was doing the results just got better, it was Rob who put me onto the Gulp range now this was a challenge for him as I liked using fresh frozen bait and in came Rob into my swim with this bag of Gulp tuna and spice he said try these, I wasn’t keen at first thinking shelf life boilie’s so started quizzing him and after convincing me that they are fresh, stay moist and nothing like a shelf life boilie I gave them ago. After opening the bag the smell hit me and I thought carp straight away everything about them was spot on and sure enough the fish couldn’t resist, which led me onto my first season fully on the Tuna and spice and the results were awesome!! Rob asked me if would like to join him for the first JRC competition at the Suffolk water park as Mr downing couldn’t make it at the last minute and I jumped at the chance! After pulling the peg we wanted 007, finding some weed free spots and just used the tactics of a few free offerings and stringers of 16mm Tuna and spice the first 24 hrs went past with no fish thinking had we done right we reeled in headed to café for full English it was only on the return to the swim that the fish had showed up in numbers so out went the rods, 10 mins later I was in in but only to be done in the weed gutted but was out quick fast soon to be in again this time straight up in my knees in water no messing this time slipped the net under and the big smile as the scales went over 30lb.

Another 2 fish came to my rods and we were crowned winners in the morning the tuna and spice done the job again. That is how I got hooked onto the gulp boilie range, since then I’ve met the JRC crew at the Suffolk water park show when they had all the gear out on display on a windswept day, had a chat with the guys a good day all round. Onto this year’s fishing I’ll be using the Red crustacean managed to get a smell of this bait and I was blown away couldn’t wait to start using it, I’ll give you an update in the next blog.
