The Shakespeare OracleXT has a softer action that the Trion, so this time we have taken the 14 foot rod to try. The softer action suits the roll casting style necessary to present the fly upstream of these Pacific Salmon on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The weather this September has been very hot and dry, temperatures each day in the mid 30’s degC, under clear blue shies. Not to worry out here as it doesn’t stop these salmon from taking properly presented flies.
The ultimate test of the rod is to go after the big King Salmon, weighing up to 50 lbs or more. We made a trip to the west coast and caught Kings up to 35 lbs, pleased to say the rods performed perfectly. Here it isn’t about casting, it’s about playing the fish and there was plenty of power in the through action of the rod to help control the fish and absorb the explosive runs from these immensely powerful fish.
We have had word that another run of fish have come in, including the Coho. We’re going there tomorrow to catch some more, so watch this space!
