I tend to spend some of my Christmas holidays planning next years fishing schedule and this year will be no different. I’m already looking forward to a February trip to Scotland targeting common skate and black mouthed dogfish, the latter a possible new species for me. That said I will be out during the days after Christmas maybe doing a little rock fishing, but also fishing the beaches just for some general sport with smaller species such as flounders and dabs to finish the...

After weeks of wet and windy weather which had severelyrestricted any chance of fishing due to what can only be described as overlydangerous seas, the forecast high pressure weather system set to edge acrossthe UK suggested conditions would finally be right for a trip after roughground conger. High pressure in the winter means cold, calm, crisp weatherconditions and this always puts the conger in feeding mood. We elected to fish a deep water rock mark in North Wales. The ...

I’m not long back from a terrific trip to Cobh, Co Cork in Ireland. The trip gave me some incredible general fishing, but what really stood out werethe amazing numbers of bass inside Cork Harbour and all alongthis southern Irish coast. I’d teamed up with Mike Hennessey, Angling InformationManager with the Southwest Regional Fisheries Board and Kevin Murphy owner ofthe Bella Vista Hotel in Cobh, also a verykeen bass angler. We’d be fishing from small 17ft boats a...

I spent a great weekend recently in Guernsey in the Channel Islands where I attended an open weekend at Mick’s Fishing Supplies working alongside the counter staff, chatting to customers and helping with general sales. Based in St Sampson’s Mick’s, stocking ABU, Penn and Shakespeare products, is the main hub for Guernsey locals, also visiting sea anglers from the UK, and enjoys a steady stream of customers throughout the day looking to buy essentials such as bait, rods, reel...

Staffs & Worcester, Shropshire Union & Trent & Mersey Canals Staffordshire   This was a match we where all looking forward too the chance to become National champions on our own patch. It’s a venue we all know fairly well due to fishing various summer and winter leagues on the venues over the last few years. A number of large opens had been organised and we all fished the last four matches as a squad to try to glean as much up to date information ...

I recently teamed up with Penn Category Manager Rob Wyatt for a field test/photo trip out from Plymouth with top local skipper Malc Jones aboard his charter boat Sea Angler 2.   We needed to put some 8/12lb class prototype Penn rods through their paces against big fast running fish, so we intended to target pollack and big conger on the reef ground.   The day started with a bait catching session not far from the famous Eddystone Lighthouse with launce sandeel ...

EWENNY ANGLING OPEN DAY I spent Saturday 28th March representing Pure Fishing at an open day to celebrate the opening of Ewenny Anglings new shop in Bridgend, South Wales. Open days are obviously important for the shop and the day was a huge success for owners Keith and Melanie Dewhurst as customers were already in the shop at 8am and it remained busy throughout the day until closing time at 5.30pm. I spent my day demonstrating items of tackle, suggesting possibl...

ON RECON I spent a little time over the past big spring tides, and will do again on the coming big springs falling either side of the Easter weekend, just walking some of the beaches I fish checking to see what the winter weather has done to them.   With the winter weather being so calm and cold generally and the sea pretty much flat calm for long periods, many of the gutters and depressions in the beaches have simply filled in, the beaches appearing to be just flat bo...

I’m constantly looking to reduce the weight and improve the balance of the rod and reel combinations I use. Since last autumn I’ve been fishing almost constantly with the ABU Revo Toro 60HS multiplier reel. I’ve been using it with 20lb Berkley braid and a 6/12lb class rod for light line fishing off the boat for all sorts of smaller species from whiting and dabs to wrasse to give me maximum fun. While fishing off the boat I got to thinking that this reel would make a g...

After a tough winter with prolonged freezing or near freezing temperatures the norm, it’s good to see spring putting her foot in the door at long last.   The recent spell of warm weather put the idea in my head that the first plaice might be available from the shore here in North Wales this past week, though I’d seen no reports of plaice being caught from other anglers. I chose a spot on the Dee Estuary and popped in to the local tackle shop for an update before access...
