I’ve just returned from the 2010 Penn cup held in Norway. We boat fished for a week out of Havosund in Finmark, this amazing area is very near too the North Cape and therefore almost the most northerly point in Europe! This puts it well north of the Arctic Circle and I experienced 24 hour daylight for the first time! The competition and fishing can best be described as frantic and intense. On some days we fished up to three, four hour competitions based on points...

Darren Massey’s match diary   Sat 14th March 2009 – Fished the Mossella Black Country open on the Dudley No 2 canal at Netherton, Drawed peg 47 on a bridge hole, the peg had a bit of form won a match 2 years ago with 12lb of Roach probably the last time it was open fished so I fancied it for a few today as it’s been very mild all week. The peg was only 10 meters wide, with a natural bank. So I decided to fish 4 lines one at 6 meters which I fed 50ml of joker b...

The Penn Cup was first fished in 2009 in Havoysund, northern Norway, and such was its success in its inaugural year that already it’s become a prestigious annual event. For July 2010 there would be six teams of four anglers, these all associated with the Pure Fishing Company who own the famous Penn brand, with representatives from all over Europe including Germany, Belgium, Italy, Holland and Britain. We came together as a collective group at the airport in Oslo and flew o...

Drop shot fishing started in the US with anglers after freshwater bass, it then came to Europe and produced good catches of perch, zander and pike, now it’s a firm favourite with anglers after sea bass and it’s proving highly effective too. Drop shotting is basically a method of vertically working a small soft plastic lure or shad up and down off the seabed in a natural manner simulating the way a small fish rises up off the seabed to intercept passing food, then drops bac...

VERTICAL JIGGING These pictures were taken during a trip to Watamu and Malindi, Kenya earlier this year. I was using a Penn 850 SSM spinning reel matched with a Penn TRQ 6'6' jigging rod. Although 'slightly' under gunned for  some of the abuse we gave it the rod performed superbly and lifted some big GT's, Grouper and Amberjack from depth's of up to 600'!. The SSM reel is in my opinion a perfect choice for vertical jigging. Rock solid and with a smooth powerfu...

Just fished a great day out with Paul Kilpatrick on the Sea Otter ll.     As usual Paul was "hot to trot" and if it hadn't have been for a couple of tortoises in the car park we would have been through the swing bridge and heading out to sea by 7am sharp. As it was we missed the bridge and then spent the next 25 minutes getting tackled up ready for the next opening at 7.30am. We were soon on our way and Paul had a couple of marks in mind that had f...

Arctic Circle Halibut

It’s strange how anglers build an affinity with certain species of fish. Bass, cod, sharks, marlin, tarpon and obviously salmon all come to mind. But there’s another fish that holds anglers spell bound, a fish that pound for pound can match any for sheer power and is one of the most prized catches you can make. That fish is the halibut! I became obsessed with halibut a few years ago when I visited the island of Loppa in the far north of Norway and caught my first. Now, whe...
