Berkley Urban Spirit Range - Tested Written by Jim O'Donnell  I get to use quite a few different rods over the period of a year and whilst they’re all pretty good, many do not boast anything more than the norm. Lets face it – a rod is a rod – and for a rod producing company it must be hard work trying to improve, and throw new ideas, into something that works perfectly well already. And then along came the Berkley Urban Spirit! ...

Annual Carp Trip

Carp trip     Well, it’s been a long time coming, but the temperature has finally crept up! Seriously, I was beginning to think that my annual carp pilgrimage would never come to pass, and worse still, that the frozen waters would actually cause some fish fatalities. Bearing in mind that it was the coldest winter this generation of carp have had to endure, it was a worrying reality that many fish could perish in these adverse conditions. A two hundred ...

Larford 6th Feb 2011 When i arrived at Larford this weekend the weather was very mild with an air temp of 12 deg C and a very strong (storm force) south westerly wind. Given the previous weeks icy conditions it was stark contrast and expected carp to show in numbers. The match was on the specimen lake and with the wind blowing down toward the chalet end of the lake, this is where the carp were expected to show in numbers. At the draw, i pulled out peg 69 which has a bit...

Tackle Test     Penn Sargus The Sargus is a superb, tough yet light weight spinning reel from Penn. It features five stainless steel bearings and a rotor bearing for silky smooth operation, plus a corrosion resistant aluminium alloy body. The front drag knob is sealed to prevent water or sand intrusion, with fine adjustment for that perfect drag setting. Other key features include Penn’s techno-balanced rotor, a non-twist line roller and inter-changeab...

PUREFISHING BLOG by Terry Jackson Roach The Trip As a nominated consultant for Pure Fishing in Ireland, I have been asked to write regular "blogs" on my adventures throughout the country using and product testing Pure Fishing tackle. As the months proceed, you will be able to follow my travels and see how the gear, and hopefully my angling abilities perform under scrutiny. To begin my journey, I had been asked to have a look at the Mitchell "Big Mou...

River Match at the Wye

After weeks of freezing weather which resulted in the River Wye completely freezing over, I was desperate to get out on the river. Come the big thaw and what happened, Man Flu, so I had to give the match a miss, however the boys did well with James Robbins winning with 26lbs on an out of sorts river carrying a lot of colour and extra water.   The next week  was hit by heavy rain and by Thursday evening the river was over the banks and the match was called off....

Wreck Pollack: Right Lure, Right Time!

Throughout 2010 I enjoyed incredible fishing with the Berkley range of soft lures, especially the Powerbait Ripple Shad and the new Powerbait Ripple Grub. These lures caught me amazing numbers of big pollack, cod and coalfish, both in the UK and in Ireland. The end of January sees the real start of the UK’s winter wreck fishing season for big pollack which lasts until mid April, but this year will also see a lot of good cod over 15lbs caught with fish possibly well over 25...

ABU 6500 Multiplier Reels: New Reel Set Up Procedure

Most anglers buy a new ABU 6500 reel from a shop or online store, take it out of the box, load it with line and go fishing. But stop and think for a minute. You don’t walk in to a car showroom, pay for the car then immediately drive it away flat out, do you! You run a brand new car in gently at first, only gradually speeding up as the car frees up and wears in. Fishing reels are just the same. Some tender loving care initially after purchase means the reel will run smoothe...

Penn 515 Mag2 - A Very Versatile Reel

Now that the Penn 515 and 525Mag2 reels have been on the market for a couple of months, whilst chatting to other anglers its interesting how so many perceive the reels to be for beach casting only. This applies especially to the 515 model. I’ve been fishing with the 515 for over a year now, initially in field test and pre production format, and now with “out of the box” reels the same as is available on the shop shelves. During that time I’ve found I’m using the reel for m...
