The Skerries Bank off Dartmouth, Devon is arguably the UK’s Mecca for boat plaice fishing. From February onwards anglers from all over the country visit this picturesque town at the mouth of the Dart estuary and venture offshore in search of this prized flatfish. Pure Fishing’s Rob Wyatt and I recently joined a group of local anglers aboard Malc Jones’ boat Sea Angler 2 for a days drift fishing over these famous and prolific banks. The day was hot, sunny, and with a near f...

Plenty of Cod and Pollock! Leaving Soverign Harbour with hardly a breath of wind, blue sky and the sun shining! The Easter weekend saw some rather uncharacteristic weather for a UK Bank Holiday! For once we had little or no wind, clear blue skies and the sun shining.    It was therefore with more than a little excitement that I set the alarm clock for a 4.00am wake-up call in order to make the 150ml drive to Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne. My friend Denis Frou...

Flamer IV found the turbot once again over the past week. The biggest was caught by Eric Cookney and weighed an impressive 16Ib. Ric caught the fish using a 20lb class rod and presented mackerel strip on a flowing trace on the drift. The turbot made several dives for freedom before being brought to the landing net. Terry’s Travels - Flounder trip   A specimen flounder for me!   For quite a while now, I’ve been planning to hit some shore marks in search of large flounder, and with the chance to try out one of the Abu Garcia Atlantic range of beach rods, it was time to make my plans a reality. From the three rod options available, I chose the longer 484 model at 15ft 4 inches, casting 3-6oz. This would give me an opportunity to feel how a longer rod casts. It would also...

Terry’s Travels   Mullet   It is no secret to any who know me that Grey Mullet are one of my favourite species in Irish waters. As an all-round angler, the attraction I have to these stunning, silver torpedoes is not difficult to fathom. Their stream-lined shape, diamond-patterned scaling and horizontal bands, seemingly air brushed by nature over a background canvas of silver-grey and cream. These are striking looking creatures that would hold pride...
