Terry’s Travels Grey Mullet

By

As the autumn draws to a close, our Mullet days are numbered for another year, particularly in the north of Ireland where sea temperatures are somewhat cooler than the southern shores. With this in mind, Andy Wolsey joined me in an attempt to persuade one or two of these silver torpedoes into giving us some end of season sport before we hang up the Mullet rods and break into the pike gear! I decided to take Andy to one of my “secret location” mullet areas. The secr...

Terry’s Travels Shakespeare Agility 7’ Spin

I originally picked this 7’ rod from Shakespeare for light spinning in search of Sea-trout, but it is also perfect for casting lures in pursuit of river trout and in particular, specimen Perch. I had the opportunity to give it a go last weekend in the hope of christening it on a few “stripeys”, and balanced it with an Abu Cardinal and 8lb Berkley XTS. This is a delightful little rod. It packs down to less than 24 inches and is as light as a feather. There is absolu...

I have been fortunate to know Kevin Lyons for a number of years now, and his local knowledge and friendship has, in no small way, played a large part in my pike angling memories and exceptional catches. Last year he quietly mentioned that he may be purchasing a new boat to compliment the fleet of Irish Lough boats he already has available for hire and guiding purposes. Acting on an invite from Kev last week, Andy Wolsey and I took a spin down to see him, ...

Over the past year or so I’ve been fishing with various prototypes of a brand new Penn 535Mag2 reel. Although, for obvious reasons, I can’t always spill all the beans on new reels we’re working on, I have tried to keep everyone informed as the reel progressed through its various prototypes via my blogs and Facebook page. At last though, the reel is about to hit the shelves and I can fill you all in on what for me has been one of the best and most versatile reels I’ve been luc...

Sea trout......Terry’s Travels

Whilst chatting on the phone with Andrew Wolsey, discussing the usual, where to head out to wet a line, Andy happened to mention that it has been a long time since he had seen a Sea trout on the fly. I have a Sea trout hot-spot that has always been kind to me and suggested we give it a couple of hours. Although tides were perfect, the wind speed had picked up to a fair pace, and casting and presenting a fly was not going to be easy. With this in mind, we each brought a...

Acting on an invite from Nick Ward, I found myself heading south yet again, this time to the east coast in search of Mustelas asterias, or to the lay-man such as me, smoothies, smuts or hounds. The plan was to join my old buddy Sid Kennedy and his son Derick for a relaxing week-end in search of this hard-fighting mini-shark. Nick’s vessel is “Neptuna”, a well equipped Redfin powered by a 115 HP two-stroke, and as we soon found out, is spine-shatteringly fast! Launc...

Sid targets Blue Shark Last year’s Shark angling was excellent off the Cork coast, with many large fish landed, and quite a few exceeding the magical 100lbs barrier. They remained and were caught through-out the summer months and well into autumn. Summer sea temperatures are lower this year, about a month behind normal, but with this great weather we have been experiencing recently, it was now time to gear up for sharks once again, and get out on the water to see what...

Yep, it’s been too long since I posted a blog, but yet again I’ve been busy with work, so fishing time had to be limited. However, sticking to that short session strategy I mentioned in previous blogs, I have been out doing some rock ledge wrasse fishing with some success, also some LRF fishing for sea scorpions, shannies, rock gobies and other small critters using 1g lead-heads and Gulp Sandworms. I should have been out shark fishing too, but the boat developed an engine pro...
